Most likely, if you are a fan of underground death metal and grind core, you know who Billy Nocera is. Billy has been running the Razorback Records label for the past decade, releasing such skull-crushing slabs of gore-soaked heaviness as Birdflesh's Night Of The Ultimate Mosh, Ghoul's Splatterthrash, Gigantic Brain The Invasion Discography, Coffins Mortuary In Darkness, the Impetigo reissues, and Hooded Menace's Fulfill The Curse. But unless you've been following the noise core underground going back to the early 90's, you might know that Billy had also run a small but prolific label called Be A Freak prior to starting up Razorback. Specializing in cassettes and 7"s from the weirdest, noisiest, most bizarre bands in the noisecore/blurr/grind/noise scene, Be A Freak's mission statement was summed up in the 1994 cassette compilation Be A Freak, a collection of brain-warped comedy bits, eruptions of experimental grind, and noise destruction catharsis. That tape blew a hole through the skull of anyone who who heard it back in the early 90's, and helped steer me in the direction of a bunch of bands like Black Mayonnaise, Earwigs and Black Leather Jesus. For years the tape had been out of print and hard to find outside of shitty 10th generation bootlegs, but Euro noise core archivists R.O.N.F. have recently reissued Be A Freak on cdr. The comp opens with a short vocal/noise piece from Billy Nocera, and then blasts into three tracks of fucked-up, low-fi death metal/noise eruptions from Pissed Off Orgasm, Billy's own noisecore project. Four minutes of manic death metal riffs exploding into pure blown out noise, shrieking vokills, ultra-chaotic drumming, harsh and brutal and low-fi, but also weirdly epic beneath all of the chaos, the songs breaking off into furious hardcore with programmed drums, looped film samples, porn samples, gouts of Merzbowian skree, fused into four minutes of total fucking ferocity.
Legendary Texas noise legend Black Leather Jesus unleashes an untitled three and a half minute track of harsh noise, Richard Ramirez blasting a flood of blackened distortion and rumbling overdriven low end, blasting crushing sheet metal destruction that borders on straight HNW style noise.
There's three tracks from the awesomely named Nut Screamer, whose sound is a murky low-fi mess of alien noise core insanity, hyper fast chaotic drumming, weird FX-soaked shrieks and yowling that sound like an alien bird screeching over the messed-up grindnoise meltdown, like hearing corrupted MP3 files of Scum playing on a dying hard drive, jittery blasts and blur-of-noise guitars that slip into retarded cowpunk and random cartoon freakery, totally fucked and psychedelic, like early Boredoms mixed with some sort of malfunctioning drum machine grind.
And there's the aforementioned early appearance from lunar sludge mutant Black Mayonnaise, with almost ten minutes of fungoid heaviness, starting with the utterly bizarre and unexpected "My Baby Left Me..." that sounds like some kind of bizarre demonic synthpop, all turgid and syrupy bass lines, distorted pounding drum machines, the synths buzzing out this catchy hook, but the vocals are unbelievably down tuned and pitch shifted, like a New Wave 45 slowed down to 10rpm while Cthulhu belches over top. The other two tracks then shift into the crawling inhuman industrial doom that I'm used to hearing from Black Mayonnaise, all chuckling demon grunts, molasses drum machine plod, crushing slithering bass lines, all glacial and industrialized and blackened, some grooving break beats a la Godflesh coming in later on, like Pure-era 'Flesh dropped in a vat of tar. Awesome!
There's some extremely stupid and goofy stuff on the comp too, like the untitled piece from Fartmonster, aka Bizarre Charlie Alien from noisemakers The Earwigs, who blurts out a ridiculous brain-damaged free-noise jam filled with growling vocals, random laser zaps, deafening fart sounds, a recording of someone pissing, completely gross and stupid, then after a minute or so turning into a sloppy mess of random metal riffing, low-fi noise and a cappela death metal vomit. Infamous Ohio "tard-core" kings Sockeye deliver two songs of obnoxious hard rock/pogo crud/fucked beat box pop, and Squirm's "Valley Girls" is a lunatic mess of goofpunk/rap/noise/grindcore slop in the vein of Sockeye that borrows liberally from the main bass line from "My Sharona". There's plenty more noise damage on here: a minute-long track of skull blasting feedback, death metal grunts, and guitar destruction from Sonic Disorder, and a chunk of chirping, abrasive alien space-noise weirdness from The Earwigs; Genital Masticator's ULTRA BRUTAL 10,000 MPH industrial noise vomit grind core oblivion that sounds like fifty phonographs all playing Fear Of God's Pneumatic Slaughter 7", Einstürzende Neubauten's Kollaps and heat-warped copies of Slayer's Hell Awaits at the same time; the improvised primitive hardcore punk, drum machines and un-PC grind of God Damn Jerks; the hellish harsh Japanese noise and creepy vocal fx of Mad Recital; Vaginal Dissection's psychedelic industrial filth, packing in spastic free-noise, bashing on various objects, wailing, screaming, distorted death metal shrieks, and random metallic skree into 90 seconds, like early Merzbow with a grind vocalist heaving up his guts in the next room; putrid sludgy hardcore, shouted rappy vocals and acoustic goofiness from God's Favorite Band; Fragmented's "Night Crawlers (Version Of Power)", a strange bass-guitar heavy psychnoise dirge with trippy electronics and creepy whispering; Extreme Hair Stench's demonic harsh noise/blackened vocals/shredding feedback annihilation; Parma, Ohio's absurdist comedy/grind freakazoids Pile Of Eggs, who start off with blitzkrieg grind core recorded live and so raw that it sounds like the band was just tossed into an industrial sized wood chipper, then go into a bizarre tape collage piece; the creepy percussive loops and keening high end drones of P'CH**W!, who remind me of Wolf Eyes; the warped Throbbing Gristle-esque industrial and mutant anti-dub of Moth; a five minute untitled track from Orifice, the low-fi power electronics/industrial/punk hybrid from Trust Obey member/comic artist/soundtrack designer/onetime Pigface collaborator John Bergin; and two tracks from Präparation-H, who tear through a deranged mash up of blasting noise core, random noise, shortwave fuzz and fractured hip-hop detritus.
And at the end, Billy Nocera returns to close the comp with a hysterical orgy of processed screams of "Noise Forever!" drowning in brutal feedback and noise, ending this collection in a daze of hell-on-earth sonic destruction.
